The best substrate for green roofs

A green roof requires a suitable roofing membrane

Green roofs are becoming increasingly popular in our country, and logically so, because a green roof is environmentally friendly, makes your roof covering last much longer, and offers many other benefits. However, it is important that you install your green roof on a suitable roofing membrane. IKO has various types of roofing membranes with root resistant properties. They allow you to safely convert your roof into a green roof.

Installing green roof on root resistant roofing

A green roof is a roof that is covered with vegetation. Examples of such vegetation are grasses, herbs or succulents. Clearly, the roots of such vegetation pose a risk of damaging the roof covering sooner or later. To avoid this, you should install your green roof on a root resistant roofing membrane. This will ensure many years of enjoyment of your green roof without any roof covering problems.

IKO carbon 250 and IKO roofgarden Pantera are also root resistant and solid, and therefore ideally suited for installation of a green roof.

IKO’s green roof solutions

IKO offers a variety of root resistant roofing membranes as the ideal base for your green roof. IKO roofgarden is a roof roll designed especially for green roofs and also for creating a roof garden, for example. IKO roofgarden is a waterproofing membrane composed of plastomer (APP) or elastomer (SBS) bitumen. With their extra root resistance and solid polyester-glass composite inlay, these membranes are ideally suited as a substrate for green roofs. This solid membrane is thus able to withstand damage caused by the vegetation and makes the roof suitable for pedestrian traffic. For added safety, these roof rolls are used in a multi-ply roof system with a bituminous underlay and cap sheet.

Green roof benefits

Perhaps you are already familiar with the terms “intensive green roof” and “extensive green roof”. An intensive green roof is a garden roof similar to a garden at ground level: planted with brushes, herbs and even trees. These green roofs are designed to be used as an actual (vegetable) garden and to be walked on frequently. It is therefore important that not only the roofing membrane but also the underlying roof structure is sufficiently solid.

Extensive green roofs, by contrast, are vegetated with plants such as mosses, herbs and succulents (sedum roof). An extensive green roof is not designed to be walked on frequently and can therefore also be installed on roof structures with lower load bearing capacity.

However, whichever type of green roof you choose to install, you will enjoy the following major benefits:

  • Good insulating effect (both thermal and sound insulation)
  • A green roof requires hardly any maintenance
  • The protective effect of a green roof quickly and easily doubles the lifespan of your roof covering.
  • Rainwater is absorbed and discharged gradually so that a heavy rain shower will not overwhelm your roof’s drainage system.

Roofs with warranty back-up

If you want to absolutely sure that you have a waterproof green roof, we advise you to have your roofing installed by an IKO Certified Contractor. Every installation is backed up by a 10-year all-in warranty. Any questions?

A utility roof helps you get the most out of your home or office

Do you have a home with a flat roof? In this case, you might have thought about converting it into a utility roof. This is a great idea as roof living spaces greatly increase the fun factor of your home or office building. What would you think, for example, of having a pleasant roof terrace where you can enjoy summer aperitifs or hold open-air meetings? Or how about a fragrant terrace garden bursting with colour where you can grow your own vegetables and herbs. Utility roofs have all kinds of possibilities. However, it is important to use an appropriate roof covering for this purpose. With IKO pantera or IKO carbon, you will be able to enjoy your utility roof for many years to come.

An utility roof with extremely resistant roofing

It goes without saying that a utility roof places an extra strain on the roof. It is important that the roof structure is sufficiently sound and suitable roofing materials have been used. However, you certainly should not delay your plans. Several excellent options exist when it comes to creating a highly comfortable or practical outdoor living space. With the appropriate roof covering, it is guaranteed that you can create a roof terrace or terrace garden that will bring you pleasure for many years. In addition, bituminous roof sheets will immediately give your roof living space an attractive and elegant look.

You can create a roof terrace or terrace garden as part of a renovation project or new construction. Check out our handy tool that will help you find the appropriate roof structure for your project.

Creating a roof terrace with IKO carbon or IKO pantera

At IKO, we have developed two families of roofing rolls, which are fully able to cope with the strain created by a roof terrace or garden terrace. The IKO carbon and IKO pantera ranges have a robust framework, which makes it possible to reinforce the membrane sufficiently so that the roof can cope with heavy use. These bituminous membranes are therefore the ideal choice for an utility roof.

The difference between Carbon and Pantera lies in the type of bitumen used. IKO carbon is made from plastomeric bitumen (APP), whereas IKO pantera is made from elastomeric bitumen (SBB). The IKO carbon range is finished on the lower side with the IKO TURBO profile with burls. This profile enables increased flame contact during flame welding, which makes it possible to lay the roll more quickly than a conventional roll with a smoother upper side.

The IKO carbon and IKO pantera families are able to resist flying sparks (Broof T4), which enables the membranes to show off their qualities, including under the most extreme test conditions. IKO membranes are made fire resistant by adding expandable graphite to the roofing roll.  This fire retardant effect remains stable throughout the life cycle of the roof.

The IKO carbon and IKO pantera ranges are finished with an attractive dark black granulate. This guarantees a very elegant and sleek finish. Another advantage of the mineral finish is that the upper layer is not subject to leaching and grey water can therefore be recovered without any problems.

Protecting your terrace garden roof against roots

Are you thinking of creating a terrace garden? In this case, you should go for a root resistance covering. This will make sure that plant roots cannot push through your roof covering. IKO carbon 250 and IKO pantera Roofgarden have a high quality roof resistant finish, which gives your roof additional protection.

IKO – proud sponsor of cyclocross and ice skating

For IKO, sponsorship of top-level sport is much more than just a logo on a jersey

Are you also passionate about sport? Then you may have already seen the IKO logo flash by on your TV screen. In cyclocross and ice skating in particular, IKO supports the top athletes of today and tomorrow in pushing their limits. As a trusted partner, we help athletes achieve their goals. We also recognise ourselves in their drive. This passion to do better every day is one of the most important core values at IKO.

“High performance means pushing the limits”

Schaatsers

The same drive as top athletes

Of course, it helps that the IKO logo flashes by countless times in thousands of living rooms. Spectators who attend live sports competitions are even more immersed in the atmosphere and thrill that sport generates. Sports sponsorship is definitely a good thing for our brand awareness. Although it’s just the visible tip of the iceberg for us. We see our commitment to sport much more as an extension of our company, as an expression of our DNA. In top-level sport, we recognise the drive that we, as a company, also feel to constantly raise the bar. And that’s what it’s all about for us.

IKO Pushing Limits

“A winner is a loser who never gives up”. That may well be the essence of top-level sport. Nobody is ever gifted a medal, every athlete is always looking for ways to improve their performance. Harder training, better equipment, different nutrition, an adapted training schedule, … Every top athlete wants to continually push their own limits. It is this vision that we also find so important at IKO. We express this drive in our motto #IKOPushingLimits.

Every top athlete wants to continually push their own limits. It is this drive that we identify with at IKO.

Always raising the bar

As a company too, we are constantly pushing our limits. And we do that on various fronts.

We make our employees part of our story of #pushinglimits. We want everyone to be able to develop and blossom as optimally as possible within IKO. That is another reason why sponsoring sport is important. Within the company, ‘our’ athletes have a lot of close supporters, and definitely for the big occasions, many people at IKO share in the joy of their achievements. This creates a bond, built around a healthy competitive spirit.

But we are also constantly searching and pushing the limits of our products. That is why we invest so much in research and development. Just like a top athlete, we are constantly fine-tuning every detail in order to maintain our position as a leading company in our field.

Schaatsers

State of the art

The goal is to always offer our customers state-of-the-art products and solutions in the field of roofing materials, insulation and liquid waterproofing. To stand still is to go backwards. For instance, our drive to move forward has ensured that our Enertherm insulation currently has an even better insulation value, is extremely pressure-resistant and walkable, and insensitive to moisture. In-house research resulted in our innovative bitumen roofing membranes with white carrara technology and flame-free roofing systems.

Going for gold with Bart Swings and Sanne Cant

The athletes sponsored by IKO are no minnows. Olympic skating champions including Jorien Ter Mors and Esmee Visser skate under the IKO flag. In cyclocross, Sanne Cant, triple world champion, is the most impressive name. Since this year, the top Belgian skater Bart Swings has also been part of the IKO skating team. He won a silver medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics and is determined to get the gold with the IKO team in Beijing 2022.

The top athletes of today and tomorrow

It is also important that we see sports sponsorship as a long-term commitment. It’s not just about linking our name to today’s top athletes. We are resolutely committed to supporting tomorrow’s top athletes and developing talent. For example, both the women and men have a youth team under the IKO flag.

Belgian top talent in cyclocross has also recently chosen the IKO team. Julie De Wilde will definitely ride with our team until 2023. Her reasons for choosing IKO are fully in line with our long-term vision on sport and sponsorship:

Julie De Wilde:

“The fact that a multidisciplinary approach is possible within the team was decisive. In the first instance, I want to progress further in the field, to accomplish the best version of myself. I still have a lot of progress to make, especially on the technical side, and I am convinced that the team will support me with total dedication.”

Don’t want to miss IKO sport news?

In our business operations, we feel an affinity with top-level sport. We also believe in continuous progress. Like top athletes, we start every day with the drive to do better than yesterday. And that’s why you see IKO emblazoned on the jerseys of many athletes in the field and on the ice. Also so you would recognise the name of our company, but above all because you can always rely on us, as a leading company in our field, to go to great lengths to offer you the best solutions.

Safely into the summer!

Stay cool while you work outside! It sure is a challenge. Working on the roof during these hot, sultry summer days is not always pleasant and it is certainly not always without risk. No matter how great and fun the summer and the sun are, protection is recommended.

Here are a number of tips to get through the summer safely!

The dangers of the sun

Although it often rains in Belgium, the sun is still strong enough to be a danger for our skin. Working in the sun without protection and direct exposure to UV radiation are bad for our skin, and may result in skin cancer. In the afternoon (between noon and 3 p.m.) the UV radiation is at its highest. Anyone working outside falls in the high-risk group.

IKO cares for your health and has listed some “safe-through-the-summer” tips for you!

  • Check the weather forecast

Check the weather conditions before you set off to start your day. When the outside temperature is higher than your body temperature, it will be more difficult to cool down your body. Prepare for the weather and avoid unexpected surprises.

  • Water, water and more water!

Survive in extreme heat? Make sure you stay hydrated. Our bodies are made up of more than 60% of water. Water helps our bodies to digest food, absorb nutrients and oxygen, etc. In other words, our bodies need water.

Standing outside a long time, directly in the sun’s UV radiation, makes you sweat. Although sweating is a good and natural way to regulate your body temperature, it may also result in dehydration when you don’t regularly drink water. Drinking enough fluids before, during and after every project is simply a must! Cheers!

  • Use the shade

When you’re working on the roof there is usually not much shade to protect you. Try to take regular breaks in the shade, organise your consultation moments in the shade or try to briefly enjoy the air-conditioning. Make sure the air-conditioning is not too cold, otherwise the difference between the outside temperature and room temperature will be too great.

  • Sunscreen, sunscreen and more sunscreen: Sunscreen is indispensable!

Sunscreen should be a part of your basic equipment! Protect every patch of skin that is not covered by clothing. One layer of sunscreen a day is not enough. It is best to apply it several times a day, preferably every 2 hours and more often when you sweat or are working in the wind.

Don’t hold back, apply generously! Use sunscreen when it is cloudy too! An overcast sky does not mean there is no UV radiation.

Experts are unable to agree what kind of SPF (sun protection factor) is best. Some experts say an SPF in excess of 50 does not result in much extra benefit, while others say that it protects your skin better against burning and skin cancer than lower factors.

What you need to remember is that every sunscreen loses its SPF (sun protection factor) over time (after application). In other words, reapply sunscreen every few hours.

  • Special clothing

Protect your head with a hat or cap and your eyes with UV absorbing sunglasses. Did you know special UV protective clothing exists? For summer outdoor work, there are even special safety caps that protect your head from falling material and the sun. Another tip! Work in an overall or long trousers and a shirt with long sleeves, particularly in the afternoon sun.

However, please enjoy the summer weather as much as you can. But don’t forget to use protection. Start the day early, stay hydrated, take several breaks and use sunscreen.

IKO wishes you a GREAT summer!

IKO carrara roofing membrane at The Zoo of Copenhagen

The zoo of Copenhagen is the new home to a unique Panda House and 2 new giant pandas. On top of the Panda House, a white IKO carrara roofing membrane has been installed, keeping a nice, clean and stable environment. The pandas and their new home were gifted by Queen Margrethe during her state visit in China in 2014.

On the 11th of April the official opening of the new Panda House took place. The new Panda House was revealed by a ceremony and in presence of the Queen of Denmark as well as the Chinese Ambassador, Deng Ying, and senior officials from China National Forestry and Grassland Administration. You could definitely say that our roof got a royal inauguration.

But why would our carrara roof be a great match for the home of these beautiful animals? Well our roof has multiple advantages that could benefit the pandas as well as the visitors. First of all our carrara roof is air-purifying which helps the surrounding environment. Second of all, it also has cooling and reflective assets which is a plus especially during summer.

The house itself was designed by a Danish architect, Bjarke Ingels, he was inspired by the Chinese yin and Yan symbols. The design allows the male and female panda to live apart most of the year, yet in close proximity and with easy access to a common area when the female is in heat once a year.

Welcoming these animals and creating the right home takes time. That’s why the zoo and their employees have been preparing for several months. As we all know, sprawling fresh bamboo is the favorite food resource of these animals. To make sure the two new inhabitants of the Copenhagen Zoo get their favorite food, a new farm in the southern part of Zealand will take care of the food supply of these animals.

To conclude, a visit to the Copenhagen Zoo to see the pandas and their house is highly recommended. Also don’t forget to take a close look at their IKO carrara roof.

Our advice… available for you

IKO Insulations informs

For some time now, IKO has been facing supply issues for MDI (“isocyanate”), the main raw material for the production of PIR insulation boards.
Not only IKO, but all the manufacturers of PIR insulation materials have been severely affected by this.
The situation has significantly deteriorated over the last few days.
We estimate that there is currently a shortage of at least 30% of the MDI that is required to meet the demand.
We expect that this will not change much in the months to come.
This situation is unprecedented!

The major petrochemical companies, our MDI suppliers, are currently being affected by a series of unscheduled shut-downs (incidents) of their production plants, and, combined with maintenance work scheduled far in advance, the increase in the demand for MDI (also as a result of the success of PIR high-efficiency insulation), and the delay in the construction of some large MDI factories, this is causing a major and acute shortage of MDI.
IKO has been presented with a fait accompli by its suppliers in this matter; a significant shortage of MDI, as well as the exponential increase in the prices of MDI raw materials, virtually on a daily basis.

The combination of all these factors has caused a very exceptional situation, which was completely unforeseeable and which we could not reasonably anticipate or estimate in advance. The impact of the price increases and the scarcity of the raw materials have had a serious impact on our production costs and production volumes. Due to this force majeuresituation, we are unfortunately unable to meet the demand for IKO Enertherm, and are obliged to adapt our sales price to take account of the exorbitant increases in the prices of the raw materials that have taken place at very short notice.

We are well aware that this puts the entire construction process under a lot of pressure.

IKO is using all the realistic means available to try to keep the supply of raw materials as smooth as possible, whereby supply has priority over the pricing. Our aim is to be able to deliver to our customers as smoothly as possible. The situation that has arisen will have an impact on the delivery periods, however, as the current scarcity of the raw materials also affects our production capacity, and is completely beyond our control.

Availability will remain our main focus, however. This inevitably implies that, due to the current force majeure situation with which we are confronted, with price increases and scarcity of the raw materials, we must ourselves continuously apply price increases for our products. We also refer to our General Sales and Delivery Terms, which state that price adjustments are possible and that the specified delivery period is always indicative.

IKO will in any case maintain the acknowledged quality of IKO Enertherm at a high level, and will not try to achieve lower prices by compromising on quality.

We hope that this situation will soon stabilise, but, as far as we can estimate at the moment, further price increases will be inevitable in the coming months.

We therefore ask you to take these circumstances into account when planning your construction work and orders.

The management and employees of IKO sincerely apologise for this situation, which has arisen from factors beyond our control, and will make every realistic and feasible effort to guide our partners through this extremely difficult period.

We would advise our direct business contacts to urgently discuss the matter with their customers, indicating the fact of force majeure, and to order in good time (delivery periods have in the meantime already extended to 8 weeks). Please be extremely careful when quoting prices for future projects.
We will keep you informed of further developments.
With kind regards,

IKO Insulations
Dirk Theuns / CEO
